Distance Education

This week we had a presentation about distance education.  I don't have much experience in online course taking as I have never taken a full course via computer before. I have however completed smaller courses such as the "Commit to Kids", which was only about two hours of my time... so nothing to really compare for an entire course load.

It was interesting to learn that there is distance education available right here in Manitoba for high school! You can check it out here: https://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/dl/index.html .

Here is some information about the web-based course options that are available in Manitoba. You will find this information on the website I have shared with you above, but go here https://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/dl/wbc/courses/index.html to see the available courses offered currently.

Teaches can use this as a great resource too! They have entire courses incase you end up having to teach a course you know nothing about. You can preview the course before you purchase or teach your class. You can find the login at blacklearn. Select the preview just underneath the login and you can see the available courses.

Distance and web-based education would be ideal for students who need to be away from school for reasons such as anxiety, illness, or geographical constraints.

What are your thoughts on distance education? Have you ever taken an online course before? What skills do you think are necessary to be a successful distance ed. learner?

  1. I have never taken a distance education course either and I'm glad I have never had to either! I feel that distance ed should only be encouraged if a face to face interaction is not possible. I think that it is really difficult to not only teach these types of courses but to learn in this manner. Thanks for the resources!

  2. I also have never taken a distance education course. I don't think I'd have the self discipline to actually do it, and finish it. I tend to get distracted and go off task. I agree with Easton ^ distance ed should only be encouraged if a face to face interaction is not possible.
